Chris felt quite silly talking to a dolphin, but he really didn't have anyone else to speak with, so he continued on.

"Where is everyone?" He asked.

"Most of us are right around here." The dolphin replied.

Chris noticed he didn't see any other mermaids in sight, "I'm the only one, aren't I?"

"The only one? Kai, you know that you are...unless you've mated." The dolphin suddenly started to sound surprised, "You have! Haven't you!? It all makes sense now!"

"Mated?"

"When a mermaid mates, she travels to the surface. She'll trick a human into it. During the process, the human switches bodies with the mermaid to carry the eggs to term. It all makes sense now! You're a humanin Kai's body! This is a glorious day."

"So...wait...I'm pregnant!?"

Just as Chris got ready to give up his search for anything intelligent under the ocean, he heard a voice -- high pitched and squeaky. He couldn't see another mermaid anywhere nearby. Then he heard it again.

"Kai, you look like you've seen a ghost! Are you quite all right?"

It suddenly dawned on him that the dolphins were talking to him. He could understand dolphins! Things were just going from weird to weirder! At least he wouldn't be without company.

"I'm okay. I just feel...not myself today." He replied to the dolphin.

Chris dove into deep waters to explore the ocean in a way no human ever had. It gave him a feeling of open freedom. He felt like he could go anywhere or do anything he wanted to down here. As he continued to swim, the restriction became far too obvious. Yes, he could do anything or go anywhere underwater, but he was now completely unable to be up on land. The underwater world may be vast, but seemed void of any other intelligent creature. Perhaps why this mermaid had longed to be out. Maybe she was the last one.

Chris dove into the water, and he was amazed by how he body was able to move. He had been a good swimmer before, but it was nothing like this! He was so deft; he didn't even need his hands. His tail was doing most of the work, meaning he could feel up how soft his skin was -- well, at least on the top half until it got scaly down below. Breathing felt a little weird, since needing air was apparently no longer an issue for him. He began to wonder if mermaids had cities underwater to visit or anything like that. But he had to pull himself back from being too curious. He may have been reveling in this experience, but he certainly didn't want to be like this forever!
